Based on the Autobiography of Mother Veronica - “God Alone Suffices”
An administrator, musician, educator, author and a committed religious - Mother Veronica was a woman of skills and qualities par excellence, the docu-drama set in 1800’s spanning Europe to India attempts to tell this untold tale and capture the essence of this force of nature to provide inspiration for present times.
Mother Veronica’s journey is exceptional as a trailblazer in Women’s education in India and a leader ahead of her times who took on many challenges to realise a vision for Carmel that spans all across the globe today.
Formerly Sophie Leeves, born in Constantinople in 1823 known today as Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion penned her memoir titled “God Alone Suffices” at the behest of her superiors in 1895.
She pens her profound realisations in her autobiography and shares her understanding of her life and mission with utmost candor.
In her writings she sheds light on many aspects of religious life and her myriad interactions with various people in India and France. What is striking is her standing up to her mentor in times of crisis, following her inner voice courageously and evolving into a leader who nurtured her mentees and juniors through compassionate letters and persistent , meticulous actions while she continued to humbly obey the orders of her superiors in serving the Sacristy. Mother Veronica became a shining example of strength and spiritual awakening. Further documentation was studied over the years by the Vatican Council and her community to trace her journey and her contribution to the Foundation of the Apostolic Carmel.
St. Agnes ,The first Women's College on the West coast of India was formed by The Apostolic Carmel in 1921 under second superior General Mother Mary Aloysia.
Though Mother Veronica never returned to India due to many obstacles she had to face , her selfless work for the missions in India blossomed and she finally gained recognition as the Foundress of Apostolic Carmel in 2012 . After having lived in oblivion for most of her life she has been declared Venerable by Pope Francis in 2014 and is a step away from Sainthood ,a magnanimous gesture to recognise her strong spirit and faith and the global legacy she has left behind.
We at Jam felt the profound connection to her life and felt guided at every step to overcome many obstacles as this film took its own form through research and findings and filming for over a year and culminated into a feature length .The learnings of deep concepts of humility, purpose , faith and community led to a realisation of the depth and universality of the message that her story carries, making the film relevant today as an inspirational piece for all ages and races and a historical record of social reform across political and cultural boundaries.
